You’re probably thinking that may be a stupid question considering this is something that you’ve dreamed of. However, it’s very valid. See, some people go crazy being cooped up in the house for long hours and need to be around other people, different environments, etc. If you consider yourself a people-person, then having a stay at home job will not make you happy. You’ll just long to be in a work home environment and end up calling it quits.

Can you afford to work home?
Your salary may dramatically decrease if you decide to accept a work home gig. It just depends on the position and the company. If this is the case, can you accept living on a lower salary? More importantly, can your lifestyle accept it? Just because you don’t have to worry about the cost of gas to commute to work, there are still fees associated with childcare, software, and possibility a home phone line if you don’t already acquire one.

Finally, if you decide to go back to the workforce after working for virtual company, your references and/or work may not be taken seriously. The work home sector, unless your an employee with a well known establishment such as Apple or AT&T, is frowned upon by most employers considering the fact that many do not choose to employ in this fashion.

Working from home requires a lot of preparation and a plan that is well-thought. It is always possible to find or create the work home job of your dreams if you take it step by step without giving up.

The best advice is find out all info you can on any program you are considering and try to choose an older one with a good track record! That said the second factor, to me, is the most important and the easiest one to control or “fix”. Your attitude and self control can cause you to fail before you even get started. If you have done your homework and picked out a good company to work with then your attitude is the most important factor to your success. If you have tried before and failed no matter how many times that is in the PAST and does not matter! Now, the Present, is all that matters and you have to believe that you will succeed.

A good company will offer all the training you can handle so you need to not only read it but understand it and follow it to the letter. Do not try to reinvent the wheel or change their instructions as that may be why you failed before. Be happy and positive about your new opportunity, learn all you can, ask questions if you get stumped and forget the Past! Please do not believe the ads that tell you that you can make a “gazillion” dollars a week and do no work or only 15 minutes a day! It ain’t gonna happen!!! A good rule of thumb is at least 2 hours a day when you first start a new business, more if you can spare it, so you can learn all the material and get all your advertising and programs set up. You have to have a quiet place to work so if you have kids try to get your work done during “nap” time or school hours so that your attention is on your work.

Do not let a lack of money stop you as there are many, many “free” advertising venues out there, “traffic exchanges, safelists, pay per click, classifieds” to name a few and you can “Google” all of them and link right to them. As you make money you should put some of it back into your business with paid advertising and continue to grow.

Remember that it’s your dream so don’t let anyone talk you out of it or put you down for it, just stay positive, work every day and have FUN with it! “Yesterday is history–Tomorrow is a mystery–Today is a gift–That’s why it’s called the present”!

So how do you manage your time when working at home? Well, the first thing you have to realise is that if you are not organised to quite a high level then your time will just become more chaotic.

Making the decision to run a home business means taking it seriously. And having the commitment to organise your time properly is vital if you are going to get anything done.

You see, when you worked in a nine-to-five you were paid for sitting around doing nothing, at times anyway. At home, with a home business to run, you have to be accountable for your time.

So take a look at the following pointers and see if you can use them when managing time when working at home:

1. Whatever you do, when you are working, turn off the email, instant messaging, television, whatever. You do not need these distractions, and they will kill your time.
2. If you have children, schedule them. Pick a time every day when you totally devote yourself to them. And stick to it. They will appreciate your commitment without distraction, and you will de-stress.
3. Keep your desk tidy. If you can’t deal with something in two minutes, file it. Simple as that.
4. Tidy your email inbox. The same principle applies. If two minutes won’t do it, then make a folder called ‘to do’ and do it later.
5. Do not, under any circumstances, work in your pyjamas.
6. Chunk your work time up into two hour slots, and then take a break. If that is too difficult, make it half an hour. But make that half an hour count.
7. Finally, let everyone you know who is incredibly pleased that you are at home (friend, family) know that you are working at home. They should understand what that means.

Working from home is liberating. But it is work. Remember that, and make it seem like a work day, and then you will enjoy it, rather than begin to resent it.

There are a lot of scams out there, but there are also a lot of legitimate work at home opportunities as well. Starting part-time with any legitimate at home business is wise. If you quit your job and  jump in with both feet, and if the business doesn’t make enough right away, you will get discouraged and say “This doesn’t work” and will give up.  Whereas, you can make it work for you if you take it slowly and do it as a part-time job, strategically building up your company to the place where you see it growing and bringing  in the kind of money that you had originally dreamed of when you first considered a home based business.   It is hard to find a company that isn’t just a lot of hype with a lot of false advertising, so do your research.  Remember, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is!

So, yes there are legitimate opportunities out there that actually pay well but you have to put in an honest effort and you will reap the benefits. There are get rich quick schemes all over the net, and it is your responsibility to identify them and disqualify them immediately.  So many people have wasted time and money on these “opporutnities”, and they get discouraged and never try again.

Good news!  There ARE legitimate work at home opportunities.  It is not easy, and don’t let anyone tell you it is.  You may or may not have to spend some money to get started.  Keep the following in mind when researching a company

1. What product are they selling?  Some companies sell a product and want you to be a distributor.  Most of these are MLM or multi-level marketing companies, which is a fantastic business model for getting started in your own business for a low start-up cost. You need to find out what the product is and if the price they are selling it for is reasonable.  Many MLM companies have good products, but can be overpriced because of the numerous levels that have to get paid, so again, do your research. 

Because of the business I am in, I know many people who are MLM-ers and do very well, but I also know many who have gotten into the business thinking they were going to be rich quickly, and after a couple weeks, they got discouraged and quit.  As with anything, start out slow and be patient.  Hard work will pay off!

2. How much money does it cost to get started?  Some companies charge a small fee for shipping, others require large sums of money to get started, as in franchise start ups.  Again, you need to do your research before you spend a dime.  It can be very frustrating when a company gets your attention, you get excited, and they ask for money before you know what product the company represents.  Beware of these, as they may be scams.  As a business person, asking for a nominal fee to cover your marketing and/or shipping costs is reasonable.  It also “weeds” out the people who aren’t really serious about going into business, “tire kickers”, if you will.  However, make sure to get as much free information first.

3. How serious are you?  Honestly…how serious and ambitious are you?  Really think about this question.  Understand that no matter what any company can promise you, the bottom line is you are in control of your success. As humans, we are more afraid of success than we are of failure!  It’s easy to fail…just throw your arms up and be done!  But to succeed takes a lot of guts, hardwork and time.  If you look at the people in your life who are successful, they never give up. I guarantee if you ask those people if they have ever failed, they will probably laugh and tell you that they have failed more times than they have succeeded.  Success isn’t a sure thing.  Only YOU know if you can commit what you need to for a successful outcome.

Being in business for yourself and having the flexibility to be there for your children when they need you is a dream for anyone.  Or maybe you don’t have to work for financial reasons, but you want something to do for yourself.  Starting a home based business is a gratifying and exciting adventure that I think moms should try.  Again, DO YOUR RESEARCH and then GO FOR IT!!!

Getting Organized
If your going to be working from home you must define your work space. The most important thing to remember when defining a work space in your home is minimizing distractions. I’ve always found my own bedroom to be a comfortable environment to work in. Remove all clutter from your new office to again minimize distractions. These can be anything unrelated to work. At this point, once your work space is determined make sure there is nothing on your desk or in the immediate area which you won’t use in a typical work day. An Important tool is a planner to keep track of appointments and project due dates which for the most part you’ll set. The better organized you are the more productive you’ll be.

Some other important materials you’ll need are a whiteboard or corkboard to outline goals and visualize them. This is extremely important because you’ll need to learn to be self motivated at all times of you’re work day…however long your work day might be. I’ve found it very effective to follow a similar schedule to your previous job so as to maintain a pattern which has worked for you in the past.

Having the correct equipment and tools to do your job, will help you become more efficient faster. This is very dependent on what type of business your running. It’s better to determine your business needs sooner that later.

As I mentioned earlier in the article, one of the benefits of working at home is answering to yourself. A another benefit is dressing casually but this doesn’t mean spending the morning in your PJ’s.
