If you’ve ever thought how perfect it would be to wake up in the morning and take a few short strides to your office in your pajamas. Who hasn’t thought this! Very recent statistics have shown that between 5-7% of North Americans have set up shop in there homes and these figures will only continue to grow. In all honesty, this arrangement can be ideal but the transition can be a challenge. The following tips will help you adapt to your new office at home.

Getting Organized
If your going to be working from home you must define your work space. The most important thing to remember when defining a work space in your home is minimizing distractions. I’ve always found my own bedroom to be a comfortable environment to work in. Remove all clutter from your new office to again minimize distractions. These can be anything unrelated to work. At this point, once your work space is determined make sure there is nothing on your desk or in the immediate area which you won’t use in a typical work day. An Important tool is a planner to keep track of appointments and project due dates which for the most part you’ll set. The better organized you are the more productive you’ll be.

Some other important materials you’ll need are a whiteboard or corkboard to outline goals and visualize them. This is extremely important because you’ll need to learn to be self motivated at all times of you’re work day…however long your work day might be. I’ve found it very effective to follow a similar schedule to your previous job so as to maintain a pattern which has worked for you in the past.

Having the correct equipment and tools to do your job, will help you become more efficient faster. This is very dependent on what type of business your running. It’s better to determine your business needs sooner that later.
